PA Sebastian Centre for Arachnology Research (PASCAR)

Established in 1998, the Division of Arachnology—one of the most esteemed and valued departments at Sacred Heart College, Thevara—has emerged as a premier center in India dedicated to taxonomic research on spiders. It is fitting to briefly reflect on the remarkable journey of this Division over the years. Founded by the late Dr. P. A. Sebastian, who led the Division until his passing, it continues to be one of the country’s foremost institutions conducting systematic and scientific studies on spiders.

Today's Fact

Jumping Spider

A member of the Salticidae family, known for its adorable appearance and remarkable abilities. One of its most impressive traits is its vision — with four pairs of eyes, the large central pair gives it incredibly sharp eyesight, even comparable to some mammals. Unlike many other spiders that use webs to catch prey, jumping spiders rely on their vision to stalk and ambush their targets, making them active hunters.

They are capable of leaping 10 to 50 times their body length, thanks to a special hydraulic system in their legs. Before jumping, they attach a silk thread to the surface they’re on, acting as a safety line in case they fall. These spiders are also unusually curious and will often turn to observe movement around them, including people. Their combination of agility, intelligence, and charm makes them truly unique among spiders.

Orb Weaver Spider
This vibrant spider is a Green Orb-Weaver, belonging to the Araneidae family. Known for its bright green body with yellow and orange markings, it spins perfectly round orb-shaped webs to trap flying insects. Often found in gardens and forests, it blends well with foliage, using its color for camouflage. Though striking in appearance, it’s harmless to humans and plays a vital role in controlling pest populations.
Pseudoscorpions1
Book Scorpion
Despite its scorpion-like pincers, it has no stinger and is completely harmless to humans. Found in old books, soil, or under bark, it feeds on small pests like mites and booklice. These beneficial arachnids even use their pincers to produce silk for making protective cocoons and often hitch rides on larger insects to move around.
